Circle 1v1 Passing & Moving

Drill Setup

  1. Create a circle about 12-15 yards with players evenly spaced around the outside of the circle.
  2. Two players step into the middle of the circle.

Drill Instructions

  1. One of the two players in the middle should starts with the ball. This player is the attacker and the other player is the defender.
  2. The attacker's responsiblity is to pass to the supporting players on the outside of the circle in order to keep possession of the ball and move in order to receive the ball back from the outside player.
  3. If the defender wins the ball, this player becomes the attacker and their roles are switched.
  4. Let each player play for 1 minute and keep track of the number of passes.
  5. Limit the number of touches if this game is too easy. 
  6. Make the grid bigger if the game is too difficult.

Drill Coaching Points

  1. Good controlled approach to the ball
  2. Passing foot's ankle must be locked with toe pointing up
  3. Turn the foot sideways where the ball is struck with the inside of the foot between the big toe and the heel.
  4. Steady head and making eye contact
  5. Non-kicking foot must be placed next to the ball with toe pointing towards the target
  6. Strike the middle of the ball; make the ball have a straight top spin towards the target.
  7. Arms up for balance and to protect space
  8. Keep body under control throughout the entire passing motion
