This is a fun dribbling drill that would be a good start to your soccer dribbling training session.
Drill Setup
- Create a large circle with cones, training sticks, or flags about 20 yards. The size of the circle can be increased or decreased based on the # of players participating.
- Each player should be evenly spaced outside the circle, each player with a ball.
Drill Instructions
- To begin the drill, instruct the players to dribble at a slow pace around the circle in the same direction.
- At random intervals, instruct the players to perform different skills such as dribbling with the left only, dribbling with the left only, dribbling with the instep, dribbling with the inside of the foot, dribbling with the outside of the foot, dribbling with the bottom of the foot, or moves such as step-overs, inside-outside.
- Yell Cut to have all players cut the ball and turn in the other direction. When the players cut they must all change direction so each player is always traveling the same direction.
- Change the speed of their dribble by making them sprint, job, and do stationary skills such as toe-taps or foundation touches back-and-forth, or triangle touches.
- The coach should randomly yell out "cross". At this time, every player must dribble from one side of the circle to the other side. This will create a bit of congestion, so players must be aware of other players.
Drill Coaching Points
- Head up when dribbling.
- Keep ball close when performing skilled dribbling, moves, or cuts.
- Push the ball out a bit when dribbling with speed.
- Wen crossing the circle, avoid knocking balls by keeping the ball close and under control.
