The soccer chain game is a fun soccer drill to build team comradery and working together. The team is only as strong as the weakest link, so teach your team to play as a unit versus individuals.
Drill Setup
- Create a large grid approximately 40X40 yards.
- One player is designated as the chain player.
- The other remaining players dribble around inside the grid.
Drill Instructions
- Have all of the players start by dribbling around the grid in constant motion.
- As the drill starts, the chain player attempts to touch any of the players with their hands or touch the player's ball with their feet.
- Once a player or player's ball is touched, that player joins the end of the chain by holding hands.
- As the chain grows, it will be more important for the chain to come together and attack a player as a unit.
- This chain game allows for many teachable moments, so make sure the kids are having fun, but step in and capture those moments.
Drill Coaching Points
- This game is a team-building exercise, so make sure the kids are having fun.
- If the kids are going off in their own direction and breaking the chain, make sure someone steps up to lead the team in the most effective direction.
- Going after the slower players early makes the chain slower, so choosing the right targets becomes more strategic in older kids.
